Recognize domestic violence is everyone’s business and not just a “family matter.” Educate yourself by speaking with local domestic violence program advocates. Suggest a victim speak to a local domestic violence program advocate for counseling and safety planning. Protect the privacy and confidentiality of the victim. Offer a listening ear to a friend or family memberwho is being abused and ask how you can help; do not be judgmental or offer advice. Notify police by calling 911 immediately if you hear or see someone being hurt. Support your local domestic violence program and volunteer your time. Engage in conversations with lawmakers and public officials about the severity of domestic violence and the need for services and legal protections.
