"Join us for Love, Sex and Lies: an Intimacy Check-Up! This screening event for intimate partner violence is in its 7th year on the Auraria campus, engaging more than 1000 students, faculty and staff in conversations about healthy (and unhealthy) relationships and providing vital resources to people in need. As an added bonus, every participant gets free pizza and a chair massage! The event is designed to be a proactive tool to prevent future incidents of violence through education and support.
Participants at the event complete a survey on the dynamics of their current or most recent relationship and have an opportunity to privately discuss their results with a counselor/advocate. Staff from community based domestic and sexual violence service organizations and campus counseling programs serve as counselor/advocates for the event. In cases where an individual is in immediate crisis, the Phoenix Center at Auraria will be on hand to provide in depth resources and support. The goal of the event is to create an opportunity for people who might not typically seek help for, or be aware of the resources available to them regarding abuse within their relationships to comfortably access information and assistance.

It takes more than 40 volunteers a day to successfully carry out this event. Love, Sex, Lies 2013 will take place on October 15th and 16th from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Multicultural Lounge and Roger Braun Rooms of the Tivoli Student Union. Both counselor/advocates and event staffers are needed. Please see a description of the volunteer roles below:
Counselor/Advocates - Advocates are needed to provide 1:1 sessions after each participant completes a survey. Counselors spend no more than 10 (maybe 15) minutes with each participant to review their survey results, talk about any concerning items, and provide needed referrals. The event is not intended to provide therapy, rather an opportunity for education and awareness.
Event Staffers – Volunteers are needed to welcome folks at registration, staff resource tables, serve as "hawkers" (stand in the Tivoli or areas just outside to promote the event and encourage people to participate), and hand out pizza.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Center on Domestic Violence at firstname.lastname@example.org and indicate which of the two days and what time of day you are interested in working. We are in need of people for 2 and 4 hour time slots (10-12:00 and/or 12:00-2:00). Also, please indicate your preference - Advocate or Event Staffer – and, if you can't have your first choice, if you are willing/able to serve in the other position. Of course, if you just have a question, that is fine too! There will be a mini training/orientation held for all volunteers a few days prior to the event to get you ready to go."
