M-Powerment is a program under Shaler Area High School's Youth Advocacy League that is run by students, for students. Students talk about issues that face young women daily, such as eating disorders, body image, pay equity, rape, dating violence, and abusive relationships. M-Powerment's goal is to eliminate negative gender issues in the school and community, change the attitude and actions of young people on equity issues, educate peers about issues concerning sexual harassment and dating violence, raise awareness on women's social justice issues, and offer outlets for young women. M-Powerment has held a Taking Back the Night event at La Roche College for many years. Taking Back the Night is a program to raise awareness of sexual assault and dating violence and how to prevent it. There will be food, live music, poetry readings, guest speakers, candle light vigil, and much more. The event is free, but outside vendors will be coming in to provide products and services.
