About the NRC
The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) was founded in 1993 as a key component in a national network of domestic violence resources. The NRCDV provides support to all organizations and individuals working to end violence in the lives of victims and their children through technical assistance, training and information on response to and prevention of domestic violence.
Mission:
To promote, support and enhance the development and implementation of services, policies, public awareness prevention activities and research efforts at national, state and local levels which assure safety and justice for all victims, survivors and others affected by domestic violence.
Projects/Resources
Technical Assistance
NRCDV provides information and technical assistance on domestic violence and related issues. The NRCDV serves organizations and individuals throughout the country, including community-based domestic violence programs, state coalitions, federal, state, local and Tribal governments and agencies, policy leaders, the media and anyone seeking information on domestic violence.
Public Education/Prevention
The NRCDV's public education/prevention activities support the public awareness and prevention education efforts of state coalitions, community-based programs and others working to end domestic violence. Project staff provide technical assistance, information and referrals through the NRCDV's toll-free information line, and focus on issues such as outreach for underserved populations, dating violence, working with the media and school-based prevention and intervention programs. The public education/prevention component of NRCDV is also responsible for publishing and disseminating documents describing exemplary statewide and local public education initiatives and annotated lists of videos and web sites related to domestic violence issues. NRCDV also provides on-going leadership, coordination and resources to the National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) Project and maintains a DVAM website.
VAWnet
The National Online Resource Center on Violence Against Women (VAWnet) provides support for the development, implementation and maintenance of effective violence against women intervention and prevention efforts at the national, state and local levels through electronic communication and information dissemination. The web site provides an easily accessible and comprehensive collection of full-text, searchable electronic resources on domestic violence, sexual violence and related issues, including all NRCDV publications. Since December 2000, VAWnet has operated an extensive public-access repository, with Applied Research documents, VAWnet/NRCDV-created resource pages, interactive Events Calendars and an “In the News” section with hundreds of links to articles focused on domestic and sexual violence and related issues.
The Women of Color Network
The Women of Color Network (WOCN), a project of the NRCDV, created in 1997, the national Women of Color Network (WOCN) promotes and supports networking and leadership development for women of color advocates and activists working in fields of domestic violence, sexual assault and other fields related to violence against women and their families. The Network seeks to enhance the capacity of these advocates and activists to define and develop culturally specific approaches to strengthen the response to various and interconnected modes of violence within their communities. Materials have been developed as a result of this initiative and are posted on this website.
For more information about the WOCN, visit the Women of Color Network Website, download the WOCN Brochure [PDF] or contact the WOCN at 800-537-2238 or 717-545-6400, also on the NRCDV TTY at (800) 553-2508.
Research and Analysis
NRCDV plays a vital role in the identification of emerging issues and trends with national impact in the field of domestic violence through the tracking of technical assistance requests and postings to VAWnet, and by the on-going participation by NRC staff in task forces and commissions to develop or evaluate policies or programs, set research agendas, review research papers and assist in the development of research priorities.
The NRCDV promotes research, policy analysis and program development designed to assist communities in their efforts to effectively respond to and prevent domestic violence. This is achieved in part by providing:
comprehensive statistics, policy and grants analyses and a variety of resource packets addressing a range of domestic violence issues;
materials to support the development and replication of model programs and exemplary projects; and
technical assistance and training to programs and/or communities in adapting these resources to meet local needs.
The NRCDV maintains consulting arrangements with nationally-renowned domestic violence experts to represent the NRCDV on panels related to research and evaluation, and to assist the NRCDV in assuring a national research agenda which is coordinated and reflects the perspectives of the field.
